2019 NFL Mock Draft: Odell Beckham trade throws first round into chaos
Washington is swinging for the fences this offseason in hopes of making a run for the NFC East crown in 2019. They were leading the division in 2018 until Alex Smith went down with a devastating lower leg injury that puts his future in serious doubt.
Most fans derided the move, but the ‘Skins pulled off a sensible trade for the Broncos’ Case Keenum, who is far from great, but should represent an upgrade over the triumvirate of Colt McCoy, Mark Sanchez, and Josh Johnson that the team ran out last year.
With Smith’s future in doubt, Washington still might consider taking a quarterback with this pick to develop for the future. My guess is, however, that with the decision to trade for Keenum and the big money they have spent for free agents like Landon Collins, the Redskins might prefer to find a player in the middle of the first round who could help them win games next season.
The need for a wide receiver got even more pressing with Jamison Crowder’s decision to sign with the Jets. Arizona State’s N’Keal Harry has the potential to be a real difference maker right away for Washington, with the upside to be a No. 1 option on the outside for the franchise.
Harry is a big bodied receiver who has the versatility to do it all. He’s got great hands, and he’s big and strong. He’s also explosive in open space, a fact that Arizona State took advantage of during his college days by letting him return punts.
An edge rusher like Florida State’s Brian Burns or Clemson’s Clelin Ferrell could make sense, too, especially after losing Preston Smith to the Packers in free agency. An interior offensive lineman such as Oklahoma’s Cody Ford and NC State’s Garrett Bradbury, will be intriguing options here as well.
