DE/OLB. Clemson. Clelin Ferrell. 17. player. 31.

This is the second of the two first round picks in the Giants arsenal now, with New York obtaining this pick from Cleveland in the Odell Beckham Jr. trade.

Bolstering their pass rush has to be a big priority for the Giants this offseason after finishing in a tie for 30th in sacks in 2018. It became even a bigger priority once the team elected to trade Olivier Vernon last week, who led the team in sacks last season. They could look at filling this void with their first pick as well, if they decide to pass on Haskins.

Assuming they took Haskins, though, this is almost certainly the direction they will go here unless all the first-round worthy edge defenders are off the board, which would lead them to some ancillary needs such as offensive line and secondary help.

Clelin Ferrell might have the highest floor of any edge rusher in this draft class, and while he might not have the ceiling of Bosa or Allen or even Sweat, I think he might be the most pro ready out of the group. He’s got excellent technical skills as a pass rusher, and is very effective at setting the edge in defending the run game.

Ferrell is a three-down player who should carve out an immediate role for whichever team takes him in the first round in April. The Giants have made a host of curious decisions this offseason, but walking away from the first round with a potential franchise quarterback and a day-one contributor off the edge would be a much-needed victory for Dave Gettleman and company in that front office.
