DT. Clemson. Christian Wilkins. 26. player. 46.

The Colts are still looking to find a run-stuffing three-technique defensive tackle that fits their 4-3 defensive scheme that they switched to last season. Luckily for them, this draft is flush with talented defensive tackles and late in the first round they could still walk away with a player as good as Christian Wilkins. In most drafts, Wilkins would go off the board in the top half of the first round. This year, he could slide toward the end of round one and might even slip to the beginning of day two.

Wilkins might not have the ceiling of other defensive tackles in this class, but he probably has the highest floor and might be the most NFL ready of any of them.

Wilkins plays with a relentless motor and knows how to leverage his size and strength to good use when going against interior linemen. He’s tough to keep out of the backfield, and while he’s probably never going to impact the game as a pass rusher, he’s an elite run stopper who should be able to improve Indianapolis’ run defense from day one.

He’s also an exceptional leader and locker room presence, a couple of invaluable traits that should immediately pay dividends for whichever team drafts him in April.

The Colts were interested in Landon Collins, but his price-tag was too high. That could mean they target a safety on the first day of the draft, although with three or four quality players at the position still available, they could grab Wilkins here and then take the best safety on the board with their early second round pick.
