13. . QB. Missouri. Drew Lock. 28. player

I don’t really see Missouri’s Drew Lock making it this far in the draft, but I’m also not mocking trades at the moment, so this is a logical landing spot for him with that in mind. In reality, expect a team to trade up in order to land him, as Lock, with patience, could develop into a quality starting QB in the NFL.

Lock has a big-arm and can fit throws into tight windows, but he’ll need development in his mental processing of the game. He’s likely to throw a lot of interceptions early in his career as he adjusts to the speed of the NFL. Ideally, he would sit behind an established starter for a couple of seasons before being handed the baton.

The Chargers would afford him that opportunity as the eventual successor to Philip Rivers. Rivers is still playing at a high level, but he turned 37 in December and he’s entering the final year of his contract in 2019. This season could very well be his last with the Chargers.

This has to be the offseason where Los Angeles lands the heir-apparent to Rivers, and if Lock slips down draft boards, they’ll be intrigued with the possibility of selecting him at the end of the first round.

It wouldn’t surprise me, though, if they waited to take a more developmental quarterback on the second or third day of the draft, instead leaning toward finding a contributor for next season on a roster that the organization feels is a piece or two away from a Super Bowl. Their window with Rivers is closing, so it could make sense to find someone who could contribute to that cause as a rookie.
