2019 NFL Mock Draft: Odell Beckham trade throws first round into chaos
The Jets would likely sprint to the podium to turn in this card if Ohio State’s Nick Bosa was still on the board at No. 3. Bosa didn’t light the world on fire with his combine performance, but his medical evaluation seems to have come back clean, which was the most important part of the process for him coming off of a season-ending injury in Columbus.
Bosa was a tick slower and slighter than many of his competitors off the edge in this class, but all of that is favorable with his brother Joey, whom the Chargers drafted No. 3 overall in 2016. He’s far too talented of a player to drop out of the Top-5, but he could find himself as the second defensive player off the board now just in terms of fit and need.
The Jets have made a couple of big splashes this offseason as they hope to contend sooner than later, inking stars such as Le’Veon Bell and C.J. Mosley to big contracts in free agency. They still have yet to find a difference maker as a pass rusher, though. They tried and failed to acquire Khalil Mack before the season last year, losing out to a better offer for the All-Pro by the Chicago Bears.
The Jets reached a three-year contract extension agreement with Henry Anderson at the start of free-agency, and while he has developed into a serviceable rusher, he doesn’t have the long-term upset of a Bosa. Bosa could be the star pass-rusher that New York has longed for, providing another puzzle piece to a suddenly burgeoning defense.
He’s got all the tools to be a dynamic edge rusher in the NFL, and he’s also a player who will immediately bolster the Jets’ run defense that ranked 26th in the league last season with his ability to set the edge and get off blocks.
