Defensive Line. Ohio State. Dre'Mont Jones. 39. player. 48.

Ohio State and Michigan are both sending a few heavy-hitters to the 2019 NFL Draft (Bosa, Haskins, Rashan Gary, Devin Bush), but Wolverine fans are going to get tired of the abundance of Buckeyes drafted overall. Things continue for Ohio State when the Buccaneers select Dre’Mont Jones with the 39th overall pick.

Jones was listed as a defensive tackle for the Buckeyes, but moved around a bit after Bosa’s injury. He flourished in Bosa’s absence, though, posting career high’s in solo tackles (26), tackles-for-loss (13) and sacks (8.5). Aside from the numbers, Jones showed he can defend the run and pass.

Versatility will be important for Jones moving forward, especially in Tampa Bay where new defensive coordinator Todd Bowles will likely implement a 3-4 defense, moving away from the 4-3. Gerald McCoy, a defensive tackle in a four-man front since entering the league, will move to defensive end. If put into a similar situation, Jones could make the transition to defensive end just like McCoy. Vita Vea, the Buccaneers’ 2018 first-round pick, will play the nose, with Jason Pierre-Paul being slotted outside Jones at linebacker. A defensive front with McCoy, Pierre-Paul, and Vea would create an envious number of 1-on-1 opportunities for the former Buckeye.

There’s a ton of talent along the defensive line in the 2019 draft class, causing a player of Jones’ caliber to possibly stay available longer than usual. Regardless, his influence in the NFL will be an immediate one.
