2019 NFL Draft: Implications of Kyler Murray going No. 1 overall
With Drew Lock slipping down draft boards, this could be a spot a team like the Chargers, Patriots, or a mystery team could attempt to make a move. The Titans might be willing trade partners with only six total picks in this draft. They could drop back and garner a couple extra picks to fill the roster.
If they stand pat, I figure this pick comes down to an edge rusher, an offensive lineman, or a receiving weapon for Marcus Mariota. Drafting Iowa tight end Noah Fant could help alleviate two of the concerns.
Tennessee has made their intentions known to build their offense around running back Derrick Henry, moving to a power-run offense and letting Mariota operate in more of a game-managing role. While Fant isn’t the run blocker that his teammate Hockenson is, he has skills that should translate.
Fant is also the best receiving tight end in this class, with a plethora of skills that make him a nightmare matchup. He’s got great speed and a ridiculous catch-radius; he should be the safety valve that Mariota needs in the middle of the field, while also remaining a true vertical threat.
There’s a lot of uncertainty surrounding Delanie Walker’s future in Nashville. He still has some juice left in the tank, but he’s coming off of a season-ending ankle injury and will be 35 by the time the next season starts.
The Titans will also likely consider edge rusher Clelin Ferrell and an offensive lineman like NC State’s Garrett Bradbury with this selection, but with Mike Vrabel’s extended time in the Patriots’ organization, he understands the value of a true difference-maker at tight end, and that’s what Fant can be.
