West Virginia Football 2019 Mock Draft: Where will the Mountaineers land?
By Phil Poling
“With the 214th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select Trevon Wesco, tight end, West Virginia University.”
The West Virginia offense didn’t feature a tight end very often, especially in the passing game, during Dana Holgorsen’s tenure. However, Wesco’s role grew exponentially down the stretch in 2018 when he caught 19 passes in the final six games – more than the rest of his career combined. If NFL teams let Wesco’s 28 career catches for only 373 yards scare them away, they’re doing themselves a disservice, though. San Francisco’s George Kittle caught only 48 passes for 737 yards while at Iowa, and he led all NFL tight ends in receiving yards in 2018.
At 6-foot-3 and 267 lbs., though, even if Wesco doesn’t contribute in the passing game right away, he can still be valuable. He showed the ability to block at the point of attack and the athleticism to reach the second level, although it did come in a spread-out Big 12. Time will tell how his game translates.
The Chiefs have something special brewing in Kansas City and it all starts with quarterback Pat Mahomes. Tight end Travis Kelce plays a huge role, as well, with some even comparing him to Rob Gronkowski. Running with that comparison, Wesco – with the right tutelage – could blossom into an Aaron Hernandez-type football player, moving from tight end to fullback to H-back. Versatility, that’ll be the word most-associated with Wesco moving forward.
The 2019 WVU NFL Draft Class could be one of the best in recent memory for the Mountaineers. All of the players on this list are draftable, it’s just by who and when it’ll happen that have yet to be answered. The entire three-day NFL Draft will take place on April 25, 26, and 27.
