Yara Greyjoy

Gemma Whelan’s Yara is a woman in a man’s world, but she has commanded respect from those on the Iron islands through sheer force of will. Her brother might be the rightful heir to the throne, but even he recognizes that she’s the better choice due to her leadership abilities.

Yara is a bit different than your typical commander, but she has earned the respect of men who would typically thumb their nose up at her, outright rejecting the idea of a woman being queen of the Iron islands.

She’s brash, cocky, and maybe a little in over her head. She’s suffered some devastating defeats, but she keeps fighting back. She had her kingdom ripped away from her, possibly unfairly, and is fighting hard to get it back. She’s also always very quotable.

It’s that last paragraph that makes it clear that Yara is none other than Kansas head coach Les Miles. It’s not a perfect comparison, but Miles was once the head coach at one of college football’s elite programs at LSU. He won a lot of games, commanding the respect of a profession despite some odd idiosyncrasies that made him stand out from your typical football coach.

Miles is finally back in the game, but with much less firepower at his disposal in Lawrence. He might not ever climb the mountaintop again to sit on the throne of the college football world, but he’ll be happy to carve out a little piece for himself with the Jayhawks.
