Penn State Football: 5 potential transfer destinations for Tommy Stevens
3. Purdue
Stevens could choose to remain in Big Ten country and just shift over to the Western division. An Indianapolis, Indiana native, Purdue would offer the opportunity for Stevens to finish up his collegiate career closer to home.
The Boilermakers were involved in his recruiting process coming out of high school, and could choose to get involved for a second time.
Jeff Brohm chose to remain at Purdue this offseason, turning down overtures from his alma mater at Louisville and signing a lucrative contract extension with the Boilermakers. He’s now making over $5 million per year, which greatly increases the pressure for him to build a winner in West Lafayette. Getting to back-to-back bowl games is a big step in the right direction, but for the kind of money it is paying him, Purdue will be expecting better than .500 results going forward.
Brohm will be looking to replace last year’s starter David Blough at quarterback. He wasn’t perfect, but he established a nice connection with freshman sensation Rondale Moore, providing a much needed spark for the Purdue offense.
Redshirt senior Elijah Sindelar is the favorite to win the job, but he won the competition coming out of fall camp last year before getting benched quickly for inconsistency. He spent most of 2017 as the starting quarterback, but he’ll have to improve in taking care of the football to keep his stranglehold on the job.
Brohm could see in Stevens someone who could add an extra dynamic to his offense. Would Stevens jump to another Big Ten program that doesn’t offer much of a better shot at a starting job? Probably not, but the intrigue of heading back home and his fit in Brohm’s system could be enough to pull him toward West Lafayette.
