1. Mississippi State

Joining forces once again with his former offensive coordinator at Penn State will undoubtedly be an intriguing option for Stevens as he searches around the country for a new home.

Moorhead’s first season as the head coach at Mississippi State was slightly disappointing, with the Bulldogs boasting a roster many felt could have pushed for 10 wins or more and instead settling at just 8-5. Known as an offensive savant, Moorhead couldn’t pull the right strings to get his offense anywhere close to the level of the loaded defense he had at his disposal.

He’ll now be tasked with replacing prolific quarterback Nick Fitzgerald, who departs Starkville with numerous school records. Stevens has a much similar game to Fitzgerald, and could be an intriguing fit in the Bulldogs’s offense.

The problem is, Moorhead never seemed to know exactly how to utilize Fitzgerald. The departed signal-caller always felt like a square peg in a round hole in Moorhead’s offense. Truth be told, Stevens would be a much better fit in former Mississippi State and current Florida head coach Dan Mullen’s system. Too bad he doesn’t have an opening.

Keytaon Thompson served as Fitzgerald’s backup last season, and has long been considered the favorite to win the starting job. He had a less than stellar spring, though, calling into question whether or not he can hold off some of the young passers on the roster, or if Moorhead might look at a graduate transfer as a stop-gap player while the young guys develop underneath him.

If he chooses to go that route this summer, then Stevens would likely be his first call.
