2019 NFL Draft: 5 biggest snubs after the first round
Behind Kyler Murray and Dwayne Haskins, Missouri’s Drew Lock seemed to be the consensus No. 3 quarterback on the board this year, so it was surprising to see three signal-callers taken in the first round and one of them not be him.
The Missouri product looked like a first round lock, but he slipped clear out of the first round. The Giants reached for Daniel Jones, and the Redskins benefited by having Haskins fall into their laps at No. 15. Haskins coming off the board in the top half of the first round seemed to signal that Lock would surely hear his name called at some point on Thursday night.
Instead, his green room wait will go one more day as it will be sometime on Friday evening before he learns of his NFL fate. Several teams in the back half of the first round had needs at the position, and it was a bit surprising to see both the Chargers and Patriots pass on him when he would have seemingly been a perfect fit as the heir apparent to either Philip Rivers or Tom Brady.
Lock doesn’t come without his faults, but he was a prolific passer the last three years in the SEC. He led the NCAA in touchdown passes as a junior in 2017 and completed a career-high 63-percent of his passes last season.
Lock impressed at the Senior Bowl and during pre-draft interviews and workouts, and he’s one of the most surprising players to slip to day two.
He should have several suitors at the top of round two, though, and he will represent excellent value at this stage of the draft. Don’t be surprised if someone orchestrates an early trade on Friday to move up and land Lock.
