87. . S. LSU. Grant Delpit. 12. player

Oh look, another quality LSU defensive back that will be drafted highly. When was the last time that happened?

The answer is every year, but Grant Delpit might be as good as any defensive back to come out of Baton Rouge in years. He has excellent size at 6-foot-3, and he’s the total package as a safety prospect with the versatility to play either position back there.

Delpit was a unanimous first team All American as a sophomore and would have been the top safety in this year’s class by a wide margin if he was eligible to enter. The safety talent at the top next year will be much better, but Delpit will still lead the charge as the top player in the class.

He’s the total package as a safety. He’s got strong coverage skills, and a high football I.Q. He seems to always know what the quarterback is thinking and has a quick first step to make a jump toward the football and make a play. He had five interceptions as a sophomore.

Delpit is also a willing tackler and loves coming up in the box to make plays against the run. Dave Aranda loved to get creative to bring Delpit up with delayed blitzes that linemen had trouble stopping. He put up 9.5 tackles-for-loss and 5 sacks as a result.

He could be a nice fit alongside another former LSU safety in Carolina, Eric Reid.
