NFL Mock Draft 2020: Way-too-early look at projected first round
Alabama’s Trevon Diggs was projected as a first round cornerback halfway through last season after locking down his side of the field through that point. He broke his foot against Arkansas, though, and was lost for the remainder of the season. He decided to return to Alabama for his senior season, providing a big boost for a secondary that needed his veteran presence.
Diggs, the younger brother of Vikings receiver Stefon Diggs, is a converted wide receiver. He’s made the switch to corner seamlessly, using his knowledge of the receiver position to his advantage in man-to-man coverage. He’s excellent in Nick Saban’s patented bump-and-run coverage, and could be in for an All-American type of season in 2019.
Diggs is also versatile enough to play outside or inside as the nickel corner. He’s practiced at nickel before, and Alabama is likely to experiment with a lot of combinations to get their best defensive backs on the field in what could be a loaded secondary.
Diggs’s versatility could make him a better fit for what the Eagles want to do than LSU’s Kristian Fulton, who would also be in play here. With Malcolm Jenkins aging, and Ronald Darby entering the final year of his contract, Philadelphia would be wise to target a defensive back early in next year’s draft.
A good senior season could easily see Diggs picked in the first round.
