Devin Brumfield rushed 14 times for 42 yards and caught three more passes for 18 yards as a freshman in 2018, but topped those numbers in the spring game alone. He rushed for 67 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, leading all rushers during the contest which was a bit of a surprise given the amount of depth in the Utes’ backfield.
Will we see a lot of Brumfield in 2019? With Zack Moss, Armand Shyne and TJ Green returning, it’s hard to say, but he did open some eyes this spring and prove that he deserves more of a look.
The sophomore running back could out-perform expectations in his first two years on campus, but if he’s looking to truly break out, that may not happen until year three when Moss and Shyne are gone. He could put himself in a position to take over when those two are gone, though.
With his 5-11, 210-pound frame, he has become a physical runner with solid muscle who is tough to bring down and the Utah defense figured that out during the spring game. He could help make up one of Utah’s deepest groups of running backs, well, ever.
