If teams want to keep up with Riley, they need a younger coach. That coach needs to be able to recruit well, and he needs to develop that talent. Tom Herman does all of these things.

Extending Herman shows that he’s the guy at Texas. That helps with recruiting against Oklahoma, which will be very important. It also gives Texas their guy for the foreseeable future. If they want to consistently beat Oklahoma, they need consistency at the head coaching position.
