Texas Football: 3 reasons Tom Herman deserves contract extension
By Dakota Cox
1. Oklahoma’s not going away any time soon
Every team in the Big 12 has to have one goal: come after Oklahoma. The Sooners are at the top of the conference, and every other team has to try to knock them down. If Texas wants to achieve this goal, Tom Herman is their best shot at doing so.
Lincoln Riley is a young head coach who has been outspoken about being very happy at Oklahoma. He’s found his home, and he intends to stay there for the foreseeable future. If teams want to keep up with Riley, they need a younger coach. That coach needs to be able to recruit well, and he needs to develop that talent. Tom Herman does all of these things.
Extending Herman shows that he’s the guy at Texas. That helps with recruiting against Oklahoma, which will be very important. It also gives Texas their guy for the foreseeable future. If they want to consistently beat Oklahoma, they need consistency at the head coaching position.
Not only do they need consistency in the job, but they need the right man at the job. Thanks to the growth and the fact that Texas actually beat Oklahoma this year, Herman has proven that he is the right man for the job. When given such a daunting task, players have to buy in and believe that they are playing for the man that will bring them to the promised land. When you watch games, you can tell that his guys have bought in.
There are a lot of reasons to believe that Tom Herman is the man that will bring Texas back, and Texas agreed with them when they extended his contract.
