Alabama Football: 3 things Steve Sarkisian will bring to Tide in 2019
By Dakota Cox
1. A relationship with Tua Tagovailoa
I’m not saying that Tua Tagovailoa needs to have his own guy as the offensive coordinator. In fact, he probably needs it the least out of most starting quarterbacks in college football. However, it is always a boost to have a familiar face in the coaching room for your star player.
When Tua was in high school, Sarkisian was the head coach of the USC Trojans. In his recruitment, USC was a top contender. The recruiting process got Tua and Sarkisian close together, and it almost got Tua to USC.
In his junior year, Tua still hasn’t had an offensive coordinator or a quarterbacks coach in back-to-back seasons. He has gone from Brian Daboll to the tandem of Mike Locksley and Dan Enos to Steve Sarkisian. No matter how mature and able Tua is, that type of instability is rough for any college player.
The overall success or failure of the Steve Sarkisian tenure will come down to a lot of things. There is no guarantee for it to work. Sark will have to be able to manage an RPO system, show some improvement in his play calling at the end of close games, and develop the talent that is on the roster.
However, there are certain things that he will definitely bring with him to the job, and his relationship with the starting quarterback is one of them.
