The 2019 Heisman Trophy race is chocked full of interesting storylines. Who are the favorites and who are the sleepers? That and more on the Saturday Blitz Podcast.

We all know the favorites in the 2019 Heisman Trophy race. Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence lead a loaded pack of candidates, but who are the sleepers for the stiff-arm trophy next season?

The list of favorites is deep, but there are plenty of under-the-radar players who are excellent value bets to make a run at the Heisman. This is the middle topic on this week’s podcast, the 12th edition of the Saturday Blitz Podcast, brought to you by John Mitchell and Zach Bigalke.

Prior to diving into talk about the Heisman race as we continue to shift our focus toward the 2019 college football season, John and Zach discuss the upcoming retirement of long time Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany. Delany has been in charge of the Big Ten since 1989, and was the elder statesmen of conference commissioners.

We talk about not only Delany’s impact on the conference he helmed for 30 years, but his larger impact on the sport as a whole. Delaney helped revolutionize the sport with the introduction of the BCS system, and his role in conference expansion shaped the college football landscape as we currently see it.

How much power do conference commissioners currently have, and what is the difference between those in charge today and those of yesteryear? Where did it all begin, when those in charge of power conferences became larger than life, and what does the future hold?

Our final topic this week has to do with tradition vs. modernity in college football uniforms. What are John and Zach’s favorite traditional uniforms? How about modern uniforms? What impact do uniforms have on recruiting in the 21st century? We tackle all of that and more as we wrap up this week’s podcast.

We will continue to focus toward the 2019 season, and our big conference previews will begin in earnest on July 3 with an overview of the FCS, and we will preview each power five conference along with a general group-of-five preview each week prior to the beginning of the season, wrapping up with a preview of the SEC on Aug. 14.
