Mississippi State Football: Breaking down the 2019 QB battle
Tommy Stevens
With Trace McSorley off to the NFL, Tommy Stevens was expected to be next in line to take over as the starter under center for Penn State. However, for whatever reason, he was not named the starter yet and decided to take a shot at a different school. He has played sparingly at quarterback over the past three seasons, with most of his production coming as a runner and even as a receiver.
In his career, Stevens has thrown for 304 yards, four passing touchdowns and one interception, with a completion percentage of 58.5 but he only has 41 career pass attempts. He does have over 500 career yards rushing on only 76 attempts with eight rushing touchdowns.
On top of that, he has two receiving touchdowns as well. Stevens’ familiarity with Joe Moorhead is something that could potentially give him an advantage in this quarterback race.
Below is a clip of Stevens as a passer. Even though Penn State is leading by 42 points at the time against an inferior opponent, it shows a glimpse of Steven’s potential as a passer. He stays in the pocket and takes a shot while delivering an accurate ball.
Below is a clip of Stevens as a runner. Most fans know the athletic ability that Stevens has and here is a good example of it.
If he can add that extra dimension in the Bulldog offense while staying healthy, he could surprise some people this fall.
