North Carolina Football: Breaking down QB battle for 2019
Sam Howell
When you turn on the high school film of Sam Howell, it’s evident that he is the best overall football player on the field. He has a lot of hype and was Florida State’s prized quarterback recruit for a reason. North Carolina swooped him away from Florida State and the kid can straight up ball.
How his high school game will translate to the ACC will remain to be seen, but he has all the tools. He isn’t as tall as the other quarterbacks he is competing with, but has plenty of height and is built like a linebacker. He is a dual-threat guy who put up video game-like numbers in high school.
In fact, Howell had over 200 total touchdowns and over 17,000 total yards during his high school career.
Howell is a polished quarterback for where he is at in his development. He has a good arm and a good feel for what type of ball needs to be thrown, he can rip it when he needs to as well. Sam had a good spring game as he was 10-for-16 and had a touchdown pass as well.
Below is a clip from high school that does a good job demonstrating what kind of arm he has.
Below is another clip from Howell in high school that shows what kind of physical runner he is. However, I anticipate the coaching staff getting Howell to avoid as many hits as possible.
Howell is an intriguing quarterback and the Tar Heels’ ceiling may be the highest with him under center in 2019.
