Neal Brown, West Virginia

First-year head coach Neal Brown opened up his remarks talking about how excited he was to bring the players with him and how they represent the state of West Virginia and the university. He mentioned how his team in hungry and humble and looking forward to growing during the season.

Brown was asked about how he has been received at West Virginia and he talked about how hospitable and gracious everyone has been and that people from the state are not too different from Kentucky, so it gives him a sense of comfort.

The schedule was the next topic and the fact that West Virginia plays 11 Power Five opponents was addressed. He stated that he knew schedule when he took the job and that he doesn’t let players worry about that — they have a one game at a time mindset.

Brown discussed how he has seen this league from the inside and out from his time as an offensive staff member at Texas Tech. He went on to mention that the much maligned defenses in the Big 12 have had to go up against top-notch quarterback play for the better part of a decade.

Contrary to popular belief, he stated that defenses in the Big 12 aren’t as bad as the national media leads people to believe.
