Penn State Football: Ranking 2019 opponents by toughness

Since the Big Ten realigned divisions to the East-West format for the start of the 2014 season, the Spartans have dominated the Land Grant Trophy game, winning four of the last five meetings. The Spartans certainly could make it five of six this season.

The big question for Michigan State this season is if it can fix its offensive woes. The Spartans were absolutely dreadful a year ago on that side of the ball while the defense was fantastic, allowing 21 points or less in 10 games.

The offense needs quarterback Brian Lewerke to be healthier and more consistent than he was a year ago.

Last time the Nittany Lions traveled to East Lansing, a three hour weather delay in the middle of the game led to a tough loss in upset fashion. It’s unlikely a weather delay happens again, but this will be tough for the Lions.

James Franklin needs to start beating the better teams in the East more consistently.
