College Football: 10 Group of Five players you need to know in 2019
By Kyle Grondin
One of my favorite players in college football, Zac Thomas Jr. accumulated 2,543 total yards and 31 total touchdowns in 12 games last season for the Mountaineers. He was the 2018 Sun Belt MVP on his way to leading them to a conference championship and New Orleans Bowl victory, and even almost leading Appalachian State to a huge upset in week one against Penn State, losing 45-38.
Thomas really stood out despite so much talent around him, as he had a three-man running back crew that accounted for 2201 yards rushing and 17 touchdowns total.
Between that and a defense that only gave up 15 points per game last season, Appalachian State was one of the best teams in the country last season, not just in the Group of Five.
Thomas proved himself a leader of the team, and he ranked No. 12 in the country in total QBR. He’ll look to improve upon last season for the Mountaineers, and maybe even secure that New Year’s Six bowl selection.
