Can defense keep up with offense?

Last year’s youth movement on defense could make for some major leaps forward in 2019 as the unit gets another year together. Only UConn has more returning production on defense among American Athletic Conference teams. Coupled with a strong offense, this group could push the Tigers over the top on their quest for a championship.

The 2018 secondary ranked 71st in pass efficiency defense and 105th in the FBS in yards allowed through the air. That number should improve dramatically as every player of note returns from last year’s group, along with a trio of junior-college transfers to push the extant group on the roster.

Because it is so deep, the secondary is even starting to see some of its stars transition toward more hybrid linebacker roles to ensure the most talent possible gets on the field. Josh Perry is one safety who looks like he will be taking snaps at outside linebacker, spelling established stars like Austin Hall and JJ Russell.

Focusing on the defensive line

The front four for Memphis could very well be the strongest part of the Tigers defense. All four starters from last year’s group return, looking ready to ramp up their productivity even further. That should put every AAC offense on notice.

Bryce Huff, Joseph Dorceus, and Jonathan Wilson are all back after recording a half dozen or more sacks last season. O’Bryan Goodson also returns after starting 23 games over his freshman and sophomore seasons.

Behind the starting quartet, the two-deep is stacked with a healthy mix of veteran stalwarts and new young talent. Put it all together, and a unit that gave up more than 170 yards on the ground per game in 2018 could also be due for a major leap in productivity.
