SEC: Jarrett Guarantano, Tennessee

Tennessee’s junior quarterback Jarrett Guarantano, started six of the last seven games for the Vols as a freshman in 2017. He threw for just under 1,000 yards with only five total touchdowns that year.

Despite his team’s struggles, he showed glimpses of the potential he possessed. Last year, Guarantano beat out grad transfer Keller Chryst, and started all 12 games. Tennessee only went 5-7, though, and played inconsistent throughout the year, but Guarantano continued to grow as a quarterback, while demonstrating tremendous toughness as he took big hit after big hit.

Guarantano only threw for 1,907 yards and 12 touchdowns in his 12 starts last year. However, he only had three interceptions and has only thrown just five picks in his 18 career starts. Taking care of the football is more than half the battle when it comes to winning games and his ability to do just that will be a reason why Tennessee takes the next step as a football program this season.

The junior has had had another offseason to develop and grow as a quarterback and has plenty of playmakers around him as the Volunteers return several of their main receivers from the 2018 season. I expect Guarantano to continue to take care of the football and take the next step as a quarterback while leading Tennessee to a bowl appearance and some program building wins.

Below is a great clip of Guarantano staying in the pocket, keeping his eyes downfield and delivering an accurate ball on a tough throw between two defensive backs on a deep cross route. He did all this while taking a hit in the pocket.

Some might overlook him in the SEC, but he’s a guy who could make some noise in 2019.
