SEC Football: Each team’s top Heisman Trophy candidate for 2019
Ole Miss: Matt Corral, QB
Benefiting from the new rule, which allows a player to maintain a year of eligibility if they play in four or fewer games, Matt Corral enters 2019 as a freshman with experience. He got snaps in 2018, but now with Jordan Ta’amu out of Oxford, it is Corral’s offense.
Last year, Corral was 16 of 22 for 239 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. It’s an incredibly small sample size, but he has shown promise. Those in Oxford that have seen him on the practice field are impressed by the bigger sample they’ve been witness to.
The trio of stars on the outside has departed, but as far as chemistry goes, that isn’t a massive loss. Corral starting with a fresh group of wideouts may even be a positive for this offense’s timing and cohesiveness. Elijah Moore will be his man in the slot, and on the outside, juniors Braylon Sanders and Dontario Drummond will be the weapons for Corral.
New offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez will be another big asset for Corral. He’s undergone some controversy recently, but Rodriguez has a good track record as an offensive coach.
This offense is young and inexperienced, but if they can gel quickly, Corral could have a big year surrounded a host of talented young weapons.
