Final thoughts: Projecting the Cougars to finish 8-4

There are going to be some very gratifying highs for BYU fans this season as they take down a couple of Power Five opponents. There are also going to be some disappointing lows, as the Cougars lose at least one game in overtime and drop a couple of other close encounters throughout the regular season.

What this season will offer, more than anything, is the chance for this cohort of players to get more playing time as they set up for a bigger run in 2020 and beyond. Eight wins for an independent playing a tough schedule is hardly something to scoff about, though, and the Cougars will easily get themselves back to a bowl game for the second straight year after missing out on the postseason in 2017.

Results could vary, certainly. It would not be a stretch to see the results flip in the Tennessee and Utah State games, and every opponent will need to be on guard this season against BYU. This team is too good to slide down to .500 in the standings. At the same time, they are probably not quite good enough to reach double digits in the win column this season.

A bowl game will lie in the future, though, and a 9-4 finish is well within reach for this year’s edition of the BYU Cougars.
