The biggest question for Mississippi State football heading into the 2019 season is who will be the starting quarterback?

Joe Moorhead has come a long way in a short amount of time.

Only four years ago at this time, he was head coach at FCS Fordham. After a brief two-year stint revitalizing Penn State’s offense as coordinator, he landed a prime gig in the SEC West. His first year in Starkville went well enough, but he is looking to build the Bulldogs into a championship contender.

Last season, the Bulldog defense did their part and then some. It was tough sledding for most opposing offenses and they gave up just under 12 points per game in the regular season.

The problem was not the defense but the offense. It was inconsistent and completely disappeared in the four regular season losses where it scored a total of 16 points and was shut out by Alabama. To Mississippi State’s credit, being shut out by Alabama is not something uncommon.

Moorhead is an offensive guru who is looking at turning around the offense. He should be able to put together more of the pieces this year. He just needs a quarterback to lead the offense.

The starting quarterback question may carry deep into camp and possibly up to the opening game against Lafayette.
