Plenty of questions on defense

The biggest question about the Texas Longhorns is going to be their defense. This isn’t to say the defense will be bad, by any means but there is just extreme uncertainty in how well this unit will play after losing nine of their 11 starters from the year before. Yes, you read that correctly, nine out of 11.

The only two players returning on defense are the safeties, Brandon Jones and Caden Sterns. Jones is a senior and will provide great leadership and Sterns was a Freshman All-American last season. These are two pretty good guys to keep.

But the doubt comes in when you realize that the front-seven and both cornerbacks will be starting this season with limited experience. Since Texas has had an incredible recruiting classes over the past two years, the talent will undoubtedly be present. Yet the discipline needed to limit offensive production from Big 12 teams like Oklahoma, West Virginia and the rest, is extremely high.

Additionally, this young defense will have to take on LSU very early in the season.

They say “defense wins championships” and for this Texas team, the statement will be ring true. If the Longhorns’ defense rises to the occasion, they will make a solid run at the Big 12 title.
