34. Utah

The good

The Utes are one of the few programs who were dominant enough for long enough to earn that they warranted an invitation to a Power 5 conference. They’re perennial Pac-12 contenders and have earned a seat at college football’s highest table.

The bad

Utah has to battle for support in its own state. They’ve done a great job gaining ground on BYU in the last 20 years, but they have a ways to go before they become Utah’s most popular fandom.

The bottom line

Urban Meyer’s undefeated 2004 season was the catalyst that launched Utah football from relative obscurity in the Mountain West, where they were a good, not great program, to their current status in college football today. The Utes thrashed No. 19 Pitt in the Liberty Bowl that year and have gone on to win 11 of their 13 bowl appearances since.

Kyle Whittingham remains one of the select few coaches to best Nick Saban and the Utah fanbase makes sure Rice-Eccles Stadium is a dangerous place for all teams to come to visit. Consistently underrated, Utah is one of the best programs out west.
