29. Boise State

The good

Owners of the most iconic blue turf in the nation, Boise State has created a college football outpost in Idaho, building a brand that many Power 5 schools don’t want to risk facing on the field.

The bad

Despite their success, the Broncos haven’t been able to make the leap to a bigger conference, falling behind TCU who experienced a similar run of success at the same time as Boise State.

The bottom line

Boise State’s Chris Petersen-led 2007 Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma was, perhaps, the loudest statement made by a Group of 5 team in the history of the sport. A small school from outside the geographic footprint of the blue bloods had upended a traditional power in thrilling fashion.

That win was a look inside one of the most exciting success stories college football has ever seen. From humble beginnings, Boise State had arrived. More than a decade later they’re still going strong. It’s a unique, quirky existence, but the Broncos are proof that great fans exist everywhere.
