College Football’s Top 50 Fanbases
13. Texas
The good
The Mack Brown era put the Longhorns at the top of the world, cementing a storied football history with a 2005 national championship in thrilling fashion. The win came in the middle of a magical 10-year run of double-digit wins and Big 12 dominance.
The bad
It’s been a tough road since. Charlie Strong left Texas with a sub-.500 record and fans lost interested as the team started losing. The journey back has had its highs and lows, but the mere fact Texas is in rebuild mode is an indictment of the state of the program itself.
The bottom line
Texas is another school which, on paper, has all the trimmings of a blue blood program. Oklahoma has surged ahead in the Big 12 ranks and the Longhorns have been forced to play from behind. There’s no reason Texas can’t get “back” to being a superpower with national relevance, but that’s not going to happen overnight.
The Longhorns will always be a fixture in the state of Texas and college football. No matter what happens, they’re not going anywhere.
