UCF Football: 3 keys to victory vs. Florida A&M in Week 1
By Kyle Grondin
2. New-look defensive line needs to find consistency
The 2019 UCF Knights have one of the most talented and deepest rosters they’ve ever had. A strong returning offensive core, skilled linebackers and probably the best secondary the school has ever seen.
If there’s one question mark with the team, it’s the plethora of new faces on the defensive line.
After losing their top four contributors, the Knights’ only returning starter is senior Brendan Hayes, who had 11 tackles for loss and three sacks in 2018. He was second team All-AAC last season and will be the focal point for the front-four.
Alongside Hayes will be sophomore defensive end Randy Charlton, who had one sack in a limited role last season.
The most important player to UCF’s success may be transfer Cam Goode, who comes in from Virginia Tech. After losing Trysten Hill and Joey Connors, Goode will be integral to taking up the middle of the defense and allowing are pass rushers to take advantage of one on one situations. With a major lack of experience at the defensive tackle positions, Goode’s talent will be relied on the most. Expect him to make a name for himself early.
