Michigan State Football: 3 bold prediction vs. Tulsa in Week 1
By Dante Pryor
1. Offense puts up big numbers
Enough about the defense already. Brian Lewerke is healthy, and is ready to atone for an inconsistent, injury-riddled 2018. Along with getting healthy, head coach Mark Dantonio attempted to address their sometimes vanilla offense by shuffling his offensive coaching staff.
Dave Warner moved from co-offensive coordinator back to quarterbacks coach, while Brad Salem moved from coaching quarterbacks to running the offense as lone coordinator. Lewerke won’t be without weapons this season.
“Dangerous when healthy” should be the mantra of the Spartan offense this season.
The offensive line should be really good if they can stay healthy. They will open holes for another group of big physical running backs led by junior running back Connor Heyward. He isn’t the only big running back they have though. Giving Heyward a breather is 230-pounder La’darius Jefferson.
Oh, and a healthy Lewerke will contribute to the running game as well. He added over 500 yards in 2017. The wide receivers are healthy and are as deep as they’ve been since the Connor Cook era. They are led by Cody White who is a No. 1 receiver waiting to happen.
A healthy Lewerke coupled with healthy piece around him should put up huge numbers against a defense that gave up over 400 yards and almost six yards per play last season.
