Quarterback

Starting quarterback: Ian Book
Backup: Phil Jurkovec

It’s nice to finally write this section without any quarterback controversy. Last season, it was current UCF starting quarterback Brandon Wimbush who earned starting duties over Book. With Wimbush gone, Book has the starting position all to himself.

The more you think about it, the more thankful Irish fans should be for Book’s sudden emergence. Had Book never panned out, we would likely be looking at Wimbush as the Irish starter for a third straight year. After all, it was current backup Phil Jurkovec who was supposed to be Notre Dame’s savior had Wimbush failed to pan out.

If not Wimbush, the Irish very well might have been starting Jurkovec right now. While the latter has shown some improvement since spring, the Blue-Gold game didn’t do his stock many favors. Thankfully we don’t live in the hypothetical. Instead, the Irish will be looking for Book to take yet another step forward and bring the Irish to the playoff for the second year in a row.
