Oregon Football: 3 bold predictions vs. Auburn in season opener
By Dakota Cox
2. Oregon’s backfield duo combines for 150-plus yards
Although neither of their backs are in the Heisman race, Oregon has two incredibly talented backs. Auburn will face plenty of CJ Verdell and Travis Dye throughout this game. Although their defensive line is great, I expect them to have some trouble stopping them.
Verdell averaged 78.3 yards a game as a freshman. Dye averaged 56.8. However, both averaged over 5.0 yards a carry. I could easily see them getting enough carries to combine for over 150. If you’re counting all yards from scrimmage, I think they easily get there. Verdell is a great receiving back, and he should be able to get multiple catches for first downs in this game.
Auburn gave up 136.4 rushing yards a game, so this number will definitely take an above-average performance from the duo. However, I think they will have a lot they want to prove on the big stage. It’s no guarantee, but that’s why these are considered bold predictions.
Herbert is a sneaky runner at quarterback as well. He would much rather throw, but he can at least scramble for first downs when he has to.
All in all, I think Auburn will have their hands full in the running game. If they let up some big plays, I would be nervous about whether or not the Tigers can pull out a victory in Week 1.
