The Skinny

Several Group-of-Five teams flexed their muscles in Week 1, and among this group, both Memphis and Boise State pulled off wins over Power Five opponents. For Memphis, it wasn’t even an upset as the Tigers were actually favored against Ole Miss, but it was surprising to see the Tigers look like the more physically imposing side.

Boise State’s win over Florida State was an upset according to Vegas, but not to those of us who have grown accustomed to watching the Broncos show how sharp their teeth are in these types of games. Freshman quarterback Hank Bachmeier helped engineer an 18-point comeback as Boise State scored 23 unanswered points to shock the Seminoles in Tallahassee.

Both Memphis and Boise State figure to be be featured prominently in the New Year’s Six race all season long.

The biggest upset of Week 1 came with Georgia State stunning Tennessee in Knoxville. Following a 2-10 season in 2018, not much was expected of Shawn Elliott’s Panthers, but after a shocking upset of the Volunteers, Georgia State looks to be in position to get back to a bowl game of the second time in three seasons.
