BYU Football: 3 takeaways from shocking win over Tennessee
2. Neither quarterback showed marked improvement
On Saturday night, Jarrett Guarantano once again looked average. He has his positive moments, but the improvement many thought may occur from year to year hasn’t displayed itself yet. He was 14 of 22 on the night, throwing for 144 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.
Similarly, Zach Wilson was inconsistent for most of the game. On the game, he went 19 of 29 for 232 yards and a touchdown. However, a large chunk of that production came on just a few late throws.
While Guarantano is in year two as a starter, Wilson is in only game two. While the Vol passer is held to a much higher standard, it’s understandable that Wilson has his inconsistencies. His growing pains are tough, but a necessary side effect of playing a brand new passer.
Yes, both quarterbacks traded touchdowns in overtime, but the game only got to that point because of both offenses’ ineffectiveness for most of regulation. It’s easy to be impacted by the last thing you see, but for most of this one, the passing games were inconsistent and ineffective.
