1. Southern Miss had several opportunities that it missed

While Southern Miss ended up losing by more than three touchdowns, the game was actually a lot closer than the score says. It was evident that Mississippi State was the better team and was a step up from Southern Miss, but it didn’t look totally outclassed in the game.

The Southern Miss offense left points on the board. In fact, the offense had several drives into Mississippi State territory that it could not capitalize on. The Golden Eagles did a good job moving the ball, but just couldn’t finish drives. They had a missed field goal in the first quarter and also had a drive into Mississippi State territory that they came away empty.

Jack Abraham did some good things at quarterback for the Southern Miss offense. He was 18-of-26 with 234 yards and two passing touchdowns. While Abraham had two passing scores, he also had two interceptions that ended up hurting Southern Miss.
