North Carolina Football: 3 takeaways from thrilling victory over Miami
By David Harvey
1. Mack Brown is back
Even though Week 1 was a huge victory for Mack Brown and his North Carolina Tar Heels, there were some pretty big blunders in the game. None more so than freshman Sam Howell kneeling on fourth down on their own side of the field to give the Gamecocks another life.
This week, Brown seemed to button up the blunders, and take care of the fundamentals of football. He ran the ball successfully. He didn’t have very man negative plays. The offense moved the ball well against Miami for the majority of the night.
Mack is known for defensive football.
Through two games, the Tar Heels have only given up an average of 22.5 points per game. Jarren Williams did seem to carve up his secondary more than what Jake Bentley was able to do a week ago. Let’s face it, though, Williams isn’t your typical freshman quarterback.
Mack may be back in his groove as a head coach after starting the season off 2-0 and 1-0 in conference play. I would look for Brown try to contend for an ACC Coastal title if the Tar Heels can continue to improve week over week and keep everyone healthy. Mack is a feel-good story that people outside of the ACC like to see.
This team will be a fun one to keep an eye on as the season progresses. Who said you can’t go back?
