Washington State Football: 3 takeaways from win over Houston in Week 3
By John Scimeca
1. D’Eriq King tied an FBS record
D’Eriq King tied an FBS record in the second quarter, becoming only the second college quarterback to throw a touchdown pass and rush for a touchdown in 14 straight games. The only other player to achieve this feat was Florida’s Tim Tebow.
King joined this rare company after a 1-yard quarterback sneak before halftime. Although he displayed impressive elusiveness from the pocket throughout the game, the Houston offense overall sputtered in the second half, only scoring a field goal until a late touchdown with under three minutes remaining.
King’s heroics were fewer in the second half last night, as mentioned above, and Houston was actually able to outrush Washington State on the ground by nearly 200 yards. But the failure to make enough big plays in the third and fourth quarters was enough to doom the Cougars to their second loss of the young 2019 season.
Houston will look to open conference play on the right foot against Tulane in a game that will give King a chance to make it 15 straight contests of at least one passing and rushing touchdown.
