College Football Rankings 2019: Projected Top 25, Week 4 – Clemson makes statement
By Zach Bigalke
Long weather delays at ESPN’s College Gameday venue led the Iowa-Iowa State rivalry game to run about six hours long from opening kickoff to final whistle. In the end, a heartbreaking gaffe by Datrone Young fielding a Hawkeyes punt allowed Iowa to escape Ames with an 18-17 victory over Iowa State to preserve their place in the AP Top 25.
Nate Stanley was outgunned by Brock Purdy, but the Hawkeyes quarterback punched in a rushing touchdown and avoided turnovers to ensure the team could survive a slow day offensively. Keith Duncan was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goal attempts, his longest coming from 42 yards out, to provide the bulk of the points as Iowa won by the barest possible margin.
After such an emotional rivalry contest, Iowa takes a bye in Week 4 before returning to the field with what they hope will be a warm-up contest against Middle Tennessee at home. Kirk Ferentz’s team should remain somewhere in the high teens in the AP Top 25 through their bye and into the beginning of October.
