Mississippi State Football: 3 takeaways from win over Kentucky in Week 4
1. Garrett Shrader started for the injured Tommy Stevens
Starting quarterback Tommy Stevens is still dealing with an injury that kept him from starting against Kentucky.
However, Mississippi State didn’t miss a beat and the true freshman quarterback looked much improved in the passing department this week. Shrader completed 17 of his 22 passes this week as last week he was only 4-of-12. He had 180 yards through the air for one interception. He was accurate this week and took what the defense gave him.
Shrader picked up where he left off last week as far as running the ball. Hill had a great game at running back, but he out-rushed him as he finished the game with 125 yards rushing. Shrader’s ability to run the ball was huge for the Bulldogs as his rushes led to several first downs to keep the drive going.
I don’t want to speculate on Tommy Stevens’ injury and do not know when he will be back. It will be interesting to see what coach Moorhead decides to do at the quarterback position when Stevens’ is back. If Shrader continues to play like he did today and take steps throwing the ball, it will be hard to replace him.
