College Football Rankings 2019: Projected Top 25, Week 5 – Wisconsin rising
By Zach Bigalke
Going into SEC country, California shored up their spot in the AP Top 25 with a narrow 28-20 victory over Ole Miss in Oxford that kept them as one of the few remaining undefeated teams in the Pac-12. After a second quarter where the Rebels held serve, the Golden Bears needed a goal-line stand on the final play to secure victory on the road. This week they will finally climb over a Washington team they already beat in Seattle.
Chase Garbers had a huge game for the Golden Bears, throwing for 357 yards and four touchdowns on 23-of-35 passing. The running game struggled to gain much ground against a stout Rebels front seven, churning out only 60 rushing yards as a team, which made Garbers even more critical to the winning effort.
Moving ahead, Cal has a short week as they prepare for their Friday-night showdown against Arizona State at home in Week 5. October begins with a tough road trip to Eugene to take on Oregon at Autzen Stadium, but at least the Golden Bears will get a well-needed bye week before diving back into the heart of their Pac-12 schedule.
