2. Notre Dame’s defense must step up

If the Georgia game taught us anything it’s the Fighting Irish have an outstanding defensive unit. There was legitimate concern after losing Dru Tranquill, Julian Love, Jerry Tillery, Te’von Coney and Jalen Elliott from last year’s squad.

Not only were they undoubtedly the best players from last season’s team, they left a huge void in leadership as well. Brian Kelly said after the loss to Clemson in the Cotton Bowl last season he felt they were closer to compete against elite teams. The Georgia game proved that especially on defense. They are big, and deep in the trenches, and have elite talent at linebacker.

This team should take advantage of Virginia’s lack of dynamic talent on offense. The Cavaliers two top rushers average under 4.0 yards per carry, and that should be no different against the Irish.

In addition, their three leading receivers are all averaging under 15 yards per catch. The Irish should be able to squeeze the offense and get the ball back to Ian Book and the offense.
