2. Navy has new wrinkles

In addition to the traditional option the Midshipmen run, they’ve added some run-and-shoot shotgun elements to their arsenal.

Offensive coordinator Ivin Jasper has added some shotgun disciplines to their offense. Malcolm Perry threw the ball 10 times which for an option-based team is a lot. He seemed comfortable in the shotgun, and the offensive line blocked their shotgun formations well.

Having to prepare for the option as well as shotgun on defense is going to add another level of stress to AAC defensive coordinators.

On defense, head coach Ken Niumatalolo made some changes to his defensive coaching staff. Brian Newberry, Brain Norwood, Kevin Downing and P.J. Volker. They were aggressive last night, and played well in spite of being small along their front, they blitzed and slanted along their defensive front. Memphis eventually made the necessary adjustments, but those defensive wrinkles gave the Memphis Tigers fits.
