2020 NFL Mock Draft, Week 6: Chase Young takes top spot
By Phil Poling
The Atlanta Falcons added two offensive lineman in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, and the year before selected Alabama wide receiver Calvin Ridley. In 2020, drafting safety Isaiah Simmons out of Clemson would give them a much-needed boost in their secondary.
Simmons is a 6-foot-3, 220-pound box safety who could easily convert to linebacker at the next level. He moves around plenty at Clemson, providing the Tigers with a versatile cover guy, and he’s produced at every level. Simmons has 177 tackles, 18 tackles-for-loss, 14 pass deflections, six sacks, four forced fumbles and an interception in 34 career games. That’s a do-it-all player if there ever was one.
The latest injury to Falcons’ safety Keanu Neal, an Achilles tear, has forced him to the injured reserve for the second time in three years. He tore his ACL in the season-opener in 2018, but this last injury could force the Falcons’ hand to move on or at least find a competent reserve. Simmons could be that player, as both are physical, in-the-box type safeties. One advantage Simmons has is he’ll enter the league a bit heavier; Simmons is also two inches taller than Neal.
