College Football 2019: Top 5 games with playoff implications in Week 6
2. No. 25 MSU at No. 4 Ohio State (Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. ET – ABC)
Is anybody going to be able to give Ohio State a good contest? If it’s not Nebraska, if it hasn’t been Michigan, it might have to be Penn State or Wisconsin. But first, this weekend’s opponent for the Buckeyes, Michigan State.
Sparty is 4-1 and a botched field goal attempt away from potentially being 5-0. The Michigan State offense has not contributed as much to winning as the lockdown defense has so far this year, but that defense also just gave up 31 points to Indiana. The Spartans have given the Buckeyes some trouble in the Big Ten in the last few seasons, so it’s not a stretch to say Mark Dantonio has Ohio State’s number.
If this year’s Michigan State squad is even remotely legit then this will be the biggest test Ohio State has faced all year. The only issue is I’m not sure Michigan State is there yet. This should be a test for Justin Fields at the very least.
The one thing that swings the pendulum back into Ohio State’s favor is this game being at the Horseshoe at night. The environment might be too much for Michigan State to overcome.
Ohio State has been unchallenged so far this year and credit is due for that. But it will be tested at least once. We know now that it wasn’t Nebraska who was up to the challenge. Time to find out it if it’s Michigan State.
