West Virginia Football: 5 bold predictions for October 2019
By Phil Poling
1. Neal Brown will get his first win vs. a Top 25 team
Neal Brown didn’t get his first win against a Top 25 team while coaching Troy until his third season when the Trojans traveled to Baton Rouge and upset the No. 25 LSU Tigers. He previously lost to No. 24 Wisconsin in his first season and No. 2 Clemson during his second. The third time was a charm, though.

It’ll likely happen sooner at West Virginia with more ranked teams on the schedule. Texas is ranked No. 11 and visits Morgantown on the first Saturday of the month, the 5th, while the ‘Eers face the No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners in Norman just two weeks later. With the Baylor Bears currently 4-0, it’s possible the final game of the month is also against a ranked opponent. Their matchup with the Bears is also a Thursday night game on Halloween.
With two certain Top 25 games this month (Texas, Oklahoma) with another a possibility (Baylor), Brown will notch his first win over a ranked opponent in just his first season at the helm of the WVU football program.
It’s highly doubtful that the ‘Eers beat Oklahoma (crazier things have happened, though), so that gives them their best opportunity against Texas and Baylor. It could even happen against both. They will win at least one of these three meetings, though, providing Brown a nice building block for the future.
