1. The Irish defense forces eight turnovers

In what has been a positive development this season, the Irish defense has grown exponentially after a somewhat shaky performance to start the 2019 campaign. Heading into the season, there was the expectation that the Irish offense would have to keep the team afloat while the new-look defense gelled.

Four games into the season, that expectation has been anything but the case. In fact, it has been the defense that has played a significant role in keeping the Irish in games this season. While the defense has excelled in numerous areas, perhaps the source of greatest significance has been the turnover margin.

The Irish currently force an average of 3.3 turnovers per game, sharing the nation lead with South Florida. Things aren’t as spectacular on the other side of the ball, but the Irish offense has held their own with an average of only one turnover per game. Nevertheless, the Irish defense stands to make quite some noise in the turnover category once again this weekend.

There’s no telling what the ceiling is for this defense against the likes of Bowling Green, but chances are they’ll be more than happy to build on their recent performances with a huge game against the Falcons. Don’t be surprised if this game ends up being the most dominant defensive performance of the 2019 season.
